Rainy day activity: Layered chalk jars

Inspired by the layered sand jars we made on the Isle of Wight, we made these brightly coloured layered chalk jars. They are very cheap and simple to make, although it can be quite a messy activity! All you need are some small jars (we used Kilner spice jars, but old baby food jars would be ideal, or you could even reuse some old plastic bottles if you have any lying around – just make sure they are completely dry or the chalk will stick to the sides), a bag of very cheap table salt, a pack of coloured chalk (chunky ones work best), a funnel and some paper.
