If I’m honest, February half term is my least favourite of the school holidays. It’s cold, it’s probably going to rain, we’re still skint from Christmas and chances are at least one of us will be coughing and sneezing our way through it.
But it’s still nice to have some quality family time and get out and about – rain or no rain! So I’ve put together a little list of activities we might get up to this February half term in Southampton and surrounding areas. I hope it helps to inspire you too!
February half term theatre shows around Southampton
On Sat 16th Feb, NST City will be celebrating their first birthday in Guildhall Square Southampton, from 11:30am – 1:30pm. There’ll be free activities, theatre tours (bookable in advance), plus a live dance performance created by NST’s resident dance theatre company ZoieLogic.
Dear Zoo, the timeless children’s story, will be brought to the stage at Portsmouth’s New Theatre Royal on Sat 16th and Sun 17th Feb, with puppets, music and lots of audience interaction!
From 19th – 23rd Feb, you can see Matthew Bourne’s wonderful ballet, Swan Lake at Mayflower Theatre Southampton.
Any little Ben & Holly fans? Take them to see Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom, live on stage in Basingstoke on Tues 19th – Wed 20th Feb. It promises to be an exciting musical adventure packed full of games, songs and laughter!
On Thurs 21st Feb, Long Nose Puppets bring their puppet magic show, Out of the Hat, to The Berry Theatre in Hedge End.
Also at The Berry Theatre this half term, Margo & Mr Whatsit is a tale of imaginary friends trying to prevent themselves being unimagined! See it on Sat 23rd Feb.
Join the celebration as Chinese New Year comes to Winchester on Sun 24th Feb. Chinese New Year Extravaganza features a showcase of Chinese performing arts and cultural tradition.
February half term hands-on activities around Southampton
Winchester Science Centre will be hosting a range of exciting extra activities this February half term, all themed around the Science of Magic! Children aged 5-9 years can also enjoy a science-themed holiday club this February half term at Winchester Science Centre.
Beaulieu National Motor Museum is celebrating 50 years of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and inviting visitors to dream up their own magical inventions during February half term, just like Caractacus Potts!
Hampshire-based LEGO building company, Bright Bricks, are bringing a new LEGO experience to Milestones Museum in Basingstoke, just in time for February half term.

Join Lepe Country Park on Tues 19th Feb for a Bird Aware Day. Find out about the wintering birds and their habitats along the Solent, through games, crafts and walks, plus bird box making workshops which are bookable in advance.
The Outdoor Learning Company will be holding a February half term holiday club at Hillier Gardens near Romsey, on Wed 20th and Thurs 21st Feb. It sounds like a lot of fun, with den building, fire lighting, bug hunting, scavenger hunts and more.
