ABOUT

The CNY 2020 Year of the Rat Celebrations also marks the second year in which the City of Southampton has banded together to celebrate the Southampton community. Once again, Southampton City Council and many other Southampton based community groups, education bodies, and businesses, are coming together to bring these celebrations for the benefit, and enjoyment of the Southampton community. Follow our social media threads to find more information about who is collaborating with us for this special occasion.

Southampton City’s 2019 CNY Year of the Pig Celebrations exposed millions of people to its activities. The UK Shaolin Temple returns once again to host Chinese New Year 2020 Year of the Rat Celebrations in collaboration with Southampton City Council. Alongside our partners, and collaborators, we will be out in full force this Chinese New Year to see in the Year of the Metal Rat with an array of celebrations taking place over two days: Saturday 25th January 2020 and Saturday 8th February 2020. The celebrations programme sees both well-known and new attractions, performances, and activities that will unite the City of Southampton and celebrate this beloved cultural festival. The line-up includes:

– CNY Gala Stage Show

– Chinese Lantern Festival Parade & Lantern Competition

– Arts & Cultural Exhibition

– Interactive Workshops

– Chinese Arts & Crafts Stalls

– Chinese Food Stalls

THE CELEBRATION

CNY 2020 kicks off with a host of fun activities and events hosted in and around Southampton’s cultural quarter: Southampton Guildhall Square. The Guildhall Square itself will house a free exhibition detailing the history and customs of Chinese New Year celebrations, as well as, arts installations, both of which are designed and produced by University students across the South. In addition, numerous free interactive workshops will be held throughout the day giving the public the opportunity to try out ancient Chinese exercises such as Tai Chi, and Qigong, and other fun activities such as traditional Chinese dancing. Other stalls will be operating throughout including face painting, arts and crafts, and many more.

The festivities continue inside the O2 Guildhall Southampton with the celebration’s headline event: the CNY 2020 stage show. This ticketed event will dazzle audiences with an extraordinary collection of acts including the popular UK Shaolin Temple martial arts performers, Lion and Dragon dancing troupes, Chinese Circus performers, plus many more cultural, music, and dance acts from Southampton, and across the UK. More workshops are held inside the O2 Guildhall including arts and crafts, Chinese food stalls, and many more fun activities for all the family to enjoy.

YEAR OF THE METAL RAT

2020 is a particular auspicious year for everyone due to the fact that the Rat it is the first animal of the Chinese zodiac cycle; for this reason the year of the Rat represents a time for new beginnings. 2020 is considered a year to focus on your goals and aspirations as your creative energies and hard work will be nurtured throughout this year. What outstanding goals do you hold? It’s time to take action.
